A player from the University of Arkansas has never won the Heisman Trophy – former running back Darren McFadden finished second twice, but it would surprise few if quarterback Tyler Wilson became the first Hog to win college football’s top award this coming season. Wilson is 16/1 on Bovada Sportsbook’s Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy.

A season ago, Wilson earned first-team All-SEC honors, the first Arkansas QB to do so, in his first as the starting quarterback. He started all 13 games after being selected as a team captain and led the Razorbacks to 11 wins, which tied the school's single-season record. The only two losses were to LSU and Alabama, who played for the national title. Wilson finished the season 277-of-438 passing for 3,638 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions, becoming just the second Razorback in school history to pass for 3,000 yards in a season.
His completions and attempts totals were single-season school records, while his yardage was No. 2 in school history and eighth-highest single-season total in SEC history. Wilson was responsible for 28 touchdowns overall, which ranked as the third-highest single-season total in school history, and his passing touchdown total ranked fourth on UA's single-season list.
Wilson's attempt-to-interceptions ratio of 1:73 was the third-highest in SEC history with a minimum of 300 attempts. He broke Arkansas' record for consecutive passes without an interception by throwing 184 straight without a pick. That’s the sixth longest streak in SEC history. His yardage, pass efficiency rating and completions were all tops in the SEC. He set a school record by throwing for 510 yards in leading the Razorbacks from an 18-point halftime deficit to a 42-38 victory vs. Texas A&M. It was just the fifth 500-yard passing game in SEC history and first since 2001.
With that on his resume, Wilson could well have been a first-round NFL draft pick but announced on Jan. 13, 2012 that he was returning to the Razorbacks for his senior season. He was brilliant in the spring game, going 31-of-41 for 467 yards with two touchdowns. Wilson will have to break in some new receivers with both Jarius Wright and Joe Adams gone. Plus Arkansas fired head coach and offensive guru Bobby Petrino this offseason due to an off-the-field scandal. But the Hogs still should have one of the nation’s top offenses and could be a national title contender if they can beat Alabama and LSU this year – both come to Fayetteville. Arkansas opens Sept. 1 vs. Jacksonville State.
