Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy: Georgia's Aaron Murray

The storied program at the University of Georgia hasn't produced a Heisman winner since the incomparable Herschel Welker in 1982. Could junior Aaron Murray take home college football's top award exactly 30 years later? The junior opened at 15/1 on Bovada's Las Vegas Odds to Win the 2012 Heisman Trophy.

Murray was arguably the best quarterback in the ultra-tough SEC as a sophomore. He started all 14 games and completed 223-of-403 passes for 3,149 yards and a single-season school record 35 TDs. Murray, the team MVP, also rushed 87 times for 111 yards and two TDs to set single-season school record for overall touchdowns at 37. In the SEC, Murray ranked second in passing (224.9 yards per game), second in total offense (232.9) and fifth in passing efficiency (146.4).

The only downside was that Murray did throw 14 interceptions, including two each in Georgia's final two games, a loss to LSU in the SEC Championship Game and a loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl. The Bulldogs ranked 80th out of 120 FBS teams last season with 25 lost turnovers. Murray, who also lost a handful of back-breaking fumbles, realizes that he can play a bigger role than anyone else in reversing the turnover trend.

This spring, according to ESPN's DawgNation, Murray worked most critically this spring on footwork, understanding that subtle moves in the pocket can prevent game-killing interceptions. In addition, Murray is focusing on making better decisions on when and how to run with the ball, which will not only help better protect the football, it would preserve his health. In the previous two seasons, Murray has taken some vicious shots while running with the ball and has occasionally lost the ball when failing to slide. It happened early in the third quarter of the SEC title game against LSU when his lost fumble in Georgia territory helped launch the Tigers' comeback victory.

Georgia opens the season at home Sept. 1 against Buffalo. The Dawgs catch a break in that they don't play either LSU or Alabama in the regular season.
