Arkansas quarterback Tyler Wilson didn’t get to play much last season as the Arkansas Razorbacks had a Heisman candidate under center in Ryan Mallett. But in the one game in which he got a lot of playing time, Wilson showed why coach Bobby Petrino thinks he will be a star. And with Mallett in the NFL, the time is now for Wilson. Can he become the first Hog to win a Heisman Trophy? Wilson is 70/1 to win the award on Bodog Sportsbook’s NCAA football player props.
Mallett suffered a concussion after guiding the Arkansas Razorbacks to a touchdown for a 14-10 lead with 5 minutes left in the first half in their Oct. 16 game at eventual national champion Auburn. Wilson came on and shredded the Tigers. He completed 15 of his first 17 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns, the last of them a 23-yarder to Greg Childs that gave the Razorbacks a 43-37 lead with 14:09 remaining. But it was all Auburn from there, with the Tigers winning 65-43 in the highest-scoring regulation game in SEC history. Wilson finished 25-for34 for 332 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. But Mallett was back the next week so Wilson didn’t play much the rest of the season.
Big things are expected of Wilson and the Hogs this year after getting to the Sugar Bowl last season (losing to Ohio State in a classic). The Razorbacks were expected to have one of the SEC’s best running back in Knile Davis, but he was lost for the season in fall camp in a crushing blow. But Wilson will have quite possibly the best receiving corps in the nation. a year early. The 6-foot-3, 215 pound Wilson doesn't have Mallett's big arm, but he’s accurate and much more mobile. And working in Petrino’s high-powered system means Wilson automatically will put up huge numbers. The one concern for that Hog offense is that the offensive line must replace four starters.
