The summer program begins this Saturday at the Del Mar racetrack and the first Grade 1 options of the season will be available at the Eddie Read Stakes. The 1 1/8 mile turf event scheduled for July 21 is a major prep for the Breeders' Cup Mile that’s open to horses ages 3 years and up.
The small field of seven horses will have four Grade 1 or Group 1 winners, including returning champion Acclamation. The other horse getting attention is Shoemaker mile winner Victor’s Cry. Throw in pacemaker Enriched as well as the seasoned Hyades and Loup Breton, and the Eddie Read Stakes is shaping up to be a competitive race.
With Enriched and Acclamation surely setting a fast pace, the opportunity for Victor’s Cry to utilize his late run for victory is the most likely scenario. He is unproven at nine furlongs, but the five-year-old has won two of four starts at Del Mar.
Four-year-old Acclamation returns to Del Mar to defend his Eddie Read Stakes and Pacific Classic Stakes 2011 titles. The son of Unusual Heat has recently worked six furlongs in 1:14 2/5. He went wire to wire in the 2011 Eddie Read, winning by 3.5 lengths, and finished 2011 with five straight wins.
The Irish-bred Loup Breton is looking like a good dark horse option at the Eddie Read. He won the San Marcos Stakes (Grade II), and has two wins, a place, and a show in six starts for trainer Julio Canani since being transferred over from France a year ago.
